Pyramids coach Krunoslav Jurcic expressed delight after his side secured a dominant 4-1 victory over Nigeria’s Rivers United, a result that propelled them to the top of Group A and into the African Champions League quarter-finals.
Speaking at the post-match press conference, Jurcic acknowledged the challenges his team faced, particularly with a depleted squad and the harsh Nigerian heat and humidity.
“We knew it would be a tough match, especially missing several key players, but our objective was clear: play to win and secure top spot in the group,” he said.
Jurcic highlighted that Pyramids fell behind in the first half to a goal he deemed controversial due to an apparent push in front of the referee.
Despite this, he remained confident in his players’ ability to turn the game around—a belief that proved accurate.
The coach also explained his tactical adjustments in the second half, aimed at managing player fatigue following a busy schedule of domestic and continental fixtures.
The changes, combined with the team’s physical superiority, paved the way for the emphatic win.
“Now we need to focus on our upcoming league match and keep this momentum going,” he added.
Looking ahead, Jurcic is optimistic about Pyramids’ prospects in the Champions League, despite missing key players such as Mohamed Hamdi and Ramadan Sobhi, and recent departures Platini Toure and Ibrahim Adel.
He expressed confidence that the squad, including new recruits still finding their rhythm, will continue to perform at a high level.
Pyramids currently lead Group A with 13 points and will conclude their group stage campaign against Power Dynamos on Saturday.
