The hoped-for miracle did not materialize for Club Africain, whose journey in the 2018–2019 CAF Champions League came to an end at the group stage, despite a victory on the final matchday. The Tunisian club will ultimately regret missed opportunities and an unfavorable goal difference that proved decisive in a highly competitive Group C.
On the sixth and final matchday, Club Africain did what was required of them on the pitch by defeating Al Ismaily 1–0. The lone goal of the match was scored by Ayedi, who calmly converted a penalty to give his side the lead. However, this victory was not enough to secure qualification for the quarterfinals. At the same time, TP Mazembe claimed a convincing 2–0 win over CS Constantine, a result that sealed Club Africain’s elimination due to goal difference.
From the opening moments of the match, Club Africain showed clear attacking intent, knowing that only a win could keep their hopes alive. They came very close to taking an early lead when Bilel Khefifi found himself through on goal in just the second minute, but the winger failed to convert the clear-cut opportunity. That miss would later come to symbolize the Tunisian side’s struggles in front of goal throughout the group stage.
As the match progressed, Club Africain continued to create chances but lacked the cutting edge needed to secure a more comfortable victory. Bassirou Compaoré was particularly unfortunate, missing two promising chances that could have increased the scoreline and potentially changed the outcome of the group. Despite their dominance and determination, the inability to capitalize on these opportunities proved costly.
When the final whistle blew, Club Africain had fulfilled their part of the task, but the result from the other Group C fixture ultimately ended their continental ambitions. With TP Mazembe’s victory in Constantine, the Congolese giants finished top of the group with 11 points, securing their place in the quarterfinals. CS Constantine, despite losing on the final day, advanced as runners-up with 10 points, edging out Club Africain on goal difference.
Club Africain also finished the group stage with 10 points, but their inferior goal difference relegated them to third place. Al Ismaily, already eliminated before the final round, ended their campaign at the bottom of the group with just 2 points.
The elimination is a bitter disappointment for Club Africain, who will reflect on missed chances and moments where greater efficiency could have altered their fate. While their final performance showed character and commitment, the overall campaign highlighted the fine margins that often decide success or failure in Africa’s premier club competition.
For Club Africain, the focus will now shift back to domestic objectives, as they look to learn from this experience and return stronger in future continental campaigns.
