CAF Champions League: Miguel Cardoso backs Mamelodi Sundowns to show character against AS FAR in first leg
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso believes his players will once again demonstrate their resilience and fighting spirit as they prepare for the CAF Champions League final first leg against Pyramids FC on Sunday in Pretoria.
The Brazilians head into the continental showdown after a demanding domestic and continental campaign, with Cardoso admitting recovery will be crucial ahead of the decisive stage of the competition.
“The season is not over. The season still has two more matches to be played. It’s now time to get the energy as soon as possible for the weekend,” Cardoso said ahead of the clash at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Sundowns have faced a congested fixture schedule in recent weeks, with fatigue becoming a growing concern within the squad as they chase continental glory.
Despite the physical demands on his players, the Portuguese tactician remains confident that his side will rise to the occasion on the biggest stage in African club football.
“The boys are surely going to show another proof of character. We’ll try to recover them as much as possible so that they can produce a good match in this Champions League final,” he added.
Cardoso has repeatedly praised the mentality of his squad throughout the season, especially after navigating difficult knockout ties to reach the final.
Sundowns booked their place in the final after edging defending champions Al Ahly SC in the semi-finals, while Pyramids overcame Orlando Pirates to secure a historic first appearance in the final.
The Pretoria-based side will be aiming to secure a positive result at home before travelling to Cairo for the return leg next weekend as they chase a second CAF Champions League title.
Kick off for the game is scheduled for 14:00 GMT.
