Algeria club MC Alger welcome South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns to the Ali la Pointe Stadium on Friday night, setting the stage for one of the standout fixtures of this round of the CAF Champions League.

Both sides enter the contest with contrasting fortunes but equally pressing motivations, making this meeting a significant early marker in Group action.

The Algerian club have been enjoying a brilliant run domestically, sitting comfortably at the top of the Ligue 1 standings thanks to a crisp, effective style of play that has earned admiration across the country.

Yet their continental campaign began on a disappointing note, with a narrow 2-1 defeat to Al-Hilal leaving them desperate to respond on home soil.

Sundowns, meanwhile, arrive in Algeria searching for consistency. Their trademark fluid, high-possession football flickered back to life during their 3-1 win over Saint-Éloi Lupopo in their opening match, but the South African champions have struggled to impose that identity for much of the season.

Despite leading the Betway Premiership, their position feels less secure than usual, with Orlando Pirates threatening to overtake them due to games in hand. Early exits from the MTN8 and the Carling Knockout have kept pressure firmly on the Brazilians, who are still carrying the weight of last season’s Champions League final defeat to Pyramids.

Friday’s reunion between Mokwena and Sundowns carries emotional significance. He was part of the coaching team that guided the club to their historic 2016 Champions League triumph, yet his own attempts as head coach repeatedly fell short in the knockout rounds. Now, leading an MC Alger side in impressive domestic form, he will be aiming to deepen Sundowns’ frustrations.

Injury concerns remain a major theme for the visitors. Themba Zwane has been out long-term, and though he was named in Hugo Broos’ preliminary AFCON squad, he is unlikely to feature in a match of this magnitude. Peter Shalulile is also expected to miss out, leaving Iqraam Rayners to spearhead the attack once again after stepping up admirably in recent weeks.

MC Alger’s defensive record at home has been one of their biggest strengths this season, with just three goals conceded in eight league matches.

Sundowns, however, have a wealth of continental experience and enter the tie having reached the knockout stages in nine of the last ten Champions League campaigns.

Both teams know what is at stake, and with their ambitions sharply aligned, the match promises an evening of tension, energy, and high-quality African football.

Kickoff is scheduled for 21:00 CAT (19:00 GMT).
