CAF Champions League: Mamelodi Sundowns secure semifinal spot despite defeat at Stade Malien

Mamelodi Sundowns, have booked their place in the CAF Champions League semifinals, despite succumbing to a 2-0 defeat against Stade Malien in the return leg of their quarterfinal tie.

The South African football powerhouse had established a commanding 3-0 advantage in the first leg on home turf, which proved enough to see them through to the next stage of the competition.

The return leg in Bamako saw Stade Malien deliver an energetic performance, eager to overturn the deficit from the first encounter. The home side took the lead, just one minute into the match through Taddeus Nkeng before Haman Mandjan doubled the advantage for the home team in the 40th-minute mark, leaving Sundowns with a tough challenge.

With no additional goal in the second half, Stade Malien cruised to victory but it was not enough to secure them a place in the semifinals.

Despite the spirited display from the Malian side, the aggregate scoreline of 3-2 favored the South African champions, ensuring their progression to the semifinals.

Sundowns approached the match with a conservative strategy, aware that their first-leg cushion gave them a significant advantage. While they were unable to score in the second leg, their disciplined defensive display limited Stade Malien’s impact, preventing a full comeback.

Their qualification keeps them on track for a potential showdown in the semifinals, where they will look to maintain their status as one of Africa’s premier club sides.

For Stade Malien, the win in the return leg is a bittersweet moment. While it demonstrates their capability and fighting spirit on home soil, the overall aggregate defeat means they exit the tournament at the quarterfinal stage, ending a campaign that showed promise but fell just short of the semifinals.

Sundowns now prepare to face Tunisian giants Esperance in the semifinals, having weathered the challenge in Mali and proven their mettle in one of Africa’s most competitive club competitions.
