Mamelodi Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has shared how he tactically masterminded Esperance downfall in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals.
The South African giants triumphed over the Tunisian powerhouse 1-0 on aggregate to secure a place in the semifinals of the CAF’s elite club competition.
Sundowns defeated Esperance 1-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinals before sharing the spoils in the return clash following a 0-0 draw.
And explaining how the side managed to settle for a draw in the return leg, Cardoso expressed Esperance’s main offensive threat, Youcef Belaili had to be contained throughout the match.
“We attempted to lessen the threat of Youcef Belaili, who accounts for 60% of Espérance’s offensive strength, and we were successful in this task.”
Having booked a slot in the semifinals, Sundowns are expected to lock horns with giants Al Ahly in a crunch clash.
Sundowns will play host to Al Ahly on April 19 before travelling for the reverse fixture at the Cairo International Stadium.
