The Diambars Institute of Saly secured its first victory (1-0) against Asfa Yennenga of Ouagadougou in their first participation in an African competition. The match took place 70 kilometers from Dakar and was part of the 32nd finals of the African Club League.
The first half of the match was uneventful, with both teams evenly matched and unable to create scoring opportunities. However, the second half saw a different game unfold. Diambars adjusted their tactics, opting for a short passing game instead of relying on long balls. This change in approach injected more rhythm into the match and provided Diambars with more scoring chances.
In the 75th minute of play, Diambars capitalized on a free kick near the penalty area. Serge Gomis, who came on as a substitute in the 68th minute, delivered the ball into the box, where Seydina Keita headed it past the Burkinabe goalkeeper, Serge Kaboré, to score the decisive goal.
Despite the efforts of Asfa Yennenga, including their five-time champion status in Burkina Faso and extensive experience in African competitions, Diambars emerged victorious. The young Diambars team exploited the current challenges faced by Asfa Yennenga to secure a well-deserved win.
The focus now shifts to the return leg in Ouagadougou, where Diambars will aim to confirm their dominance and secure their place in the next round of the competition.
