Former Egypt international Ahmed Shobir has shed light on the controversial disallowed goal during Pyramids FC’s CAF Champions League semi-final clash against Orlando Pirates.
The first leg of the semi-final ended in a goalless draw last week at Orlando Stadium. Just before halftime, Pyramids FC believed they had taken the lead when Fiston Mayele found the back of the net with a well-executed volley. However, the goal was ruled out for offside, despite a deflection off Orlando defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi.
Speaking on Sports FM, Shobir revealed he consulted with referee colleagues who confirmed both disallowed goals from Pyramids were the correct decisions.
“Pyramids scored two goals against Orlando. The second was clearly a handball—no debate there. But the first goal is the one sparking controversy,” he said.
“I spoke to some referee colleagues, and they all agreed the goal was invalid because the defender didn’t intentionally play the ball. They also mentioned that the rule has recently been amended, even though I initially thought the goal should have stood.”
He added: “According to them, the referee shouldn’t have even gone to VAR, but once he did, the VAR team convinced him to overturn the goal.”
Shobir acknowledged the competitive nature of the encounter, noting that both sides had their chances.
“Pyramids were close—scoring and missing several chances. Orlando also posed threats. I have a feeling Pyramids can edge it in the return leg, but it will definitely be a tough and tightly contested match.”
The decisive second leg is scheduled for Friday, April 25, at the 30 June Stadium in Cairo, with kickoff set for 18:00 GMT.
