CAF Champions League: Pressure Mounts as ES Sétif and MC El Eulma Face Off in Must-Win Derby
The Chahid Hamlaoui Stadium in El Eulma is set to host a crucial all-Algerian showdown tonight as MC El Eulma (MCEE) takes on reigning champions ES Sétif in the second round of Group B in the CAF Champions League.
Both teams head into the derby looking to bounce back from disappointing defeats in their opening matches. MCEE fell away to Al Merreikh, while Sétif were shocked at home by USM Alger, dropping vital early points in their title defence. With their continental ambitions already under pressure, neither side can afford a second slip-up.
“We’ve definitely turned the page on the first match,” said Fares Belkheir, assistant coach at ES Sétif, in an interview with El Watan. “Life doesn’t stop after a win or a defeat. The group has quickly regained its calm and is working hard. The spirit is positive.”
Sétif, known as Aigle Noir, warmed up for the derby with a 2–1 friendly win over USM Harrach, hoping to reset momentum ahead of the high-stakes clash.
Belkheir acknowledged the threat posed by El Eulma, despite their relegation to Algeria’s second division. “MCEE is a solid team, offensively strong, and plays good football,” he noted. “They’ve kept the core of their squad and will be tough opponents. For obvious reasons, I won’t speak about the weaknesses we’re targeting.”
The match promises to be a physically intense battle, with both sides desperate to avoid an early exit from the group stage. For Sétif, the pressure of defending their title weighs heavily. For El Eulma, playing at home in front of passionate supporters, it’s about proving their worth on the continental stage.
Tonight’s encounter is more than just a derby—it’s a turning point for two ambitious clubs staring at the edge of elimination.
