Historic Algerian Derby Group Set for CAF Champions League
The upcoming CAF Champions League group stage will witness an unprecedented occurrence: three Algerian clubs drawn together in the same group.
The draw, held this Tuesday in Cairo, placed USM Alger, ES Sétif, and MC El Eulma alongside Sudanese side Al Hilal in Group B, setting the stage for a series of high-stakes Algerian derbies.
USM Alger assistant coach Dziri Billel described the draw as “unprecedented” and “historic,” highlighting the unique challenge and opportunity it presents. “I expected to see two Algerian clubs in the group, but not three. This is truly a first. We must accept the draw and focus on advancing as far as possible in the competition,” Billel told APS.
He emphasized that each team in the group has a realistic chance of reaching the semi-finals, and expressed hope that two Algerian sides will make it through to the final four. “Our goal is to succeed from the very first match and return with positive results,” he added.
Billel also conveyed confidence in USM Alger’s prospects, bolstered by potential reinforcements in the upcoming transfer window. “With the new signings planned for the off-season, our squad will be stronger than ever,” he concluded.
The historic group stage promises intense competition and heightened local rivalries as Algerian clubs vie for continental glory.
