CAF Champions League: AS Pikine Aims High Despite Domestic Struggles
Despite battling at the bottom of the league table, AS Pikine of Senegal has made a promising start to their CAF Champions League campaign. Last weekend, the club secured a 1-0 victory over Etoile Filante of Ouagadougou in the first leg of the preliminary round.
The modest yet determined Senegalese outfit hopes to build on this narrow advantage in the return leg and progress further in the competition — a feat that would mark a significant milestone for Senegalese club football.
Speaking to the newspaper Stades, team captain Alioune Badara Ndione expressed the squad’s ambition:
“We want to represent Senegal with dignity by reaching a level that no Senegalese club has managed to reach until now. We’re not playing for small prizes in this African Champions League.”
Ndione emphasized the team’s unity and tactical discipline as keys to success:
“In addition to playing calmly, we will try to apply our coach’s instructions to the letter.”
While their league campaign remains a concern, AS Pikine is determined to write a new chapter in Senegalese football history by advancing deep into continental competition. All eyes now turn to the crucial second leg against Etoile Filante in the coming days.
