Al Ahly’s management has reportedly imposed fines on the players following their surprising elimination from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns.
The defending African champions were knocked out of the competition on away goals after a 1-1 draw in the second leg at Cairo International Stadium last Friday.
The fallout from the result has already seen significant changes, with head coach Marcel Koller and sporting director Mohamed Ramadan both dismissed for failing to defend the club’s title.
According to Kooora, the management has fined each player who featured in the second leg a sum of 500,000 Egyptian pounds (approximately USD 9,832.70).
The report also suggests that players would have received bonuses had they managed to overcome Sundowns and reach a sixth consecutive final, making the fine a logical consequence in the wake of their elimination.
Al Ahly will now shift their focus to the Egyptian Premier League, where they are currently in second place, trailing league leaders Pyramids FC by three points.
