In a heartfelt address at the CAF ExCo Meeting Press Conference on 13 February, Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe heaped praise on Uganda and Tanzania for the way they played at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
He said he was truly impressed with the progress shown by the two East African nations on the continental stage. “I was happy with how Uganda and Tanzania played in Morocco. East Africa will be a powerhouse like West Africa, North Africa and South Africa,” Motsepe said, highlighting a shift in the region’s footballing identity.
The 2025 AFCON, which concluded several weeks ago in Morocco, was a thrilling spectacle of passion and drama. Senegal national football team emerged as champions after a dramatic final in Rabat, edging hosts Morocco national football team 1-0 in extra time thanks to Pape Gueye’s decisive strike. The final was one of the most chaotic in the history of the tournament, marred by controversial decisions, a pitch protest and an interrupted match before the decisive blow was struck.
For Uganda and Tanzania, this AFCON was one of milestones and newfound respect. The Tanzania national football team reached the knockout stages of the Cup of Nations for the first time ever, drawing attention to their growing tactical discipline and resilience. Prior to this tournament, Tanzania had never advanced beyond group play in their AFCON history, making their progression a shining moment for the team and its supporters.
Uganda’s campaign was marked by determined performances and collective spirit. The Uganda national football team showcased a solid defensive base and battling qualities that helped them compete respectably against established African sides.
While they did not go deep into the knockout rounds, observers noted that their organization and work rate were signs of a team evolving with purpose.
Motsepe’s remarks come at a significant time for East African football. Uganda and Tanzania are among three nations, alongside Kenya, that will host the AFCON 2027 tournament, a historic first for the region and a chance to continue building their football legacy on home soil.
