CAF Awards 2025: Algeria Reacts After Mahrez and Amoura’s Omission

The Confederation of African Football has sparked fresh controversy after leaving out two of Algeria’s top performers, Riyad Mahrez and Mohammed Amoura, from the 2025 CAF Awards nominees. Despite their exceptional seasons, neither player appeared in any of the major categories.

Mohammed Amoura finished as the leading scorer in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, while Riyad Mahrez lifted the Asian Champions League title with Al-Ahli Saudi.

Their exclusion has left many fans and analysts questioning CAF’s selection process once again.

This latest oversight adds to a growing list of questionable decisions surrounding the awards. Supporters in Algeria expressed frustration, insisting that both players earned recognition through consistent performances and leadership at club and national levels.

However, Algeria will still have representation in three categories. Forward Ismaïl Belkacemi, formerly of USM Alger and now at Al-Ahli Tripoli in Libya, features among the nominees for the African Interclub Player of the Year award. His inclusion provides a small consolation for Algerian football fans.

Belkacemi impressed across multiple competitions during the past season. His decisive goals and work rate helped his team reach significant milestones, earning him a deserved spot among Africa’s standout home-based players.

Still, the absence of Mahrez and Amoura overshadows Algeria’s presence at the awards. Many observers argue that Mahrez’s achievements, including his continental triumph and continued influence as one of Africa’s most decorated players, warranted recognition.

Similarly, Amoura’s form in front of goal made him one of the most effective forwards in African international football this year.

Critics say the omission reflects inconsistency in CAF’s evaluation criteria. Over the years, the governing body has faced criticism for favouring certain leagues or competitions when shortlisting players. This year’s decision appears to have reopened that debate.

In Algeria, the disappointment runs deep. Fans see the snub as a lack of respect for their players’ contributions on both domestic and international fronts.

Local media outlets described the move as a “serious oversight” and questioned whether the federation truly values performances outside Africa’s top clubs.

Despite the controversy, the Algerian Football Federation has yet to issue an official statement. Instead, it has chosen to focus on celebrating the country’s existing nominations while supporting players like Belkacemi, who continue to carry Algeria’s flag with pride.

The CAF Awards 2025 promise fierce competition across categories, but the exclusion of Mahrez and Amoura ensures that Algeria’s grievances will remain part of the conversation long after the winners are announced.
