CAF appoints Senegal’s Issa Sy for blockbuster Esperance–Al Ahly Champions League quarter-final

The Confederation of African Football has handed a major responsibility to Senegalese referee Issa Sy, appointing him to officiate the highly anticipated CAF Champions League quarter-final first leg between Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Al Ahly.

The blockbuster encounter is scheduled for 15 March 2026 at the iconic Hammadi-Agrebi Stadium in Radès, where two of Africa’s most decorated clubs will battle for a place in the semi-finals.

With preparations intensifying across the continent ahead of the mid-March first legs, attention has also turned to the match officials entrusted with overseeing these decisive fixtures. For the showdown between Tunisian powerhouse Espérance Sportive de Tunis and Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC, CAF has opted for the experience and authority of Issa Sy.

Sy, a respected international referee, is no stranger to high-stakes matches. He has officiated in both CAF interclub competitions and on the global stage, including appearances at the FIFA Club World Cup. His résumé also includes participation at the most recent Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where he was selected to handle the heavyweight quarter-final clash between Algeria and Nigeria — a testament to the trust placed in his capabilities.

The first leg in Radès promises to be a fiery affair, with Espérance aiming to capitalise on home advantage against a battle-hardened Al Ahly side renowned for its continental pedigree. In such a charged atmosphere, Sy’s experience and composure will be crucial in maintaining control and ensuring a fair contest.

As the road to continental glory narrows, all eyes will not only be on the players but also on the Senegalese official tasked with keeping order in one of the quarter-finals’ most eagerly awaited ties.
