From November 12 to 14, key representatives from CAF, FIFA, and member associations convened in Cairo to establish a comprehensive strategy for advancing women’s football across Africa. This meeting follows more than a year after the initial Symposium on Women’s Football, reflecting ongoing efforts to create a unified roadmap for the sport’s growth on the continent.
The gathering brought together officials from CAF’s 54 member associations, highlighting the collaborative approach needed to address the challenges and opportunities in African women’s football. Central to the discussions were CAF President Ahmad and FIFA Secretary General Fatma Samoura, who also serves as FIFA’s delegate for Africa. Their presence underscored the significance of aligning continental and global objectives to promote the development of the women’s game.
Coordinated by the CAF Women’s Football Department, the three-day event focused on formulating policies, programs, and initiatives to strengthen grassroots participation, enhance competitive structures, and improve overall management of women’s football. Delegates discussed key issues including youth development, professional leagues, coaching standards, refereeing, and marketing, aiming to create a sustainable framework that can support long-term growth.
The strategy is intended to provide a clear pathway for the 54 member associations, offering guidance on best practices and resources for developing women’s football from grassroots to elite levels. By establishing a coordinated approach, CAF aims to ensure that all countries can benefit from consistent development programs and access opportunities to compete internationally.
The meeting also emphasized the importance of collaboration between CAF and FIFA, ensuring that initiatives are in line with global objectives for women’s football while addressing the specific challenges faced in Africa. Fatma Samoura highlighted the need for strong governance, investment in infrastructure, and the promotion of gender equality in sport as central pillars of the strategy.
CAF President Ahmad reiterated the organization’s commitment to fostering an inclusive and competitive environment for female footballers across Africa. He stressed that the roadmap should not only focus on elite competitions but also on nurturing talent at youth levels, expanding participation, and providing professional opportunities for players, coaches, and officials alike.
With this strategy, CAF aims to raise the profile of women’s football, encourage greater participation, and improve the standard of competition across the continent. The adoption of a common framework ensures that all member associations have the tools and guidance necessary to implement effective development programs.
As African women’s football continues to grow, this coordinated effort represents a significant step toward professionalization, increased visibility, and enhanced opportunities for players. The three-day Cairo meeting marks a renewed commitment by CAF, FIFA, and national associations to advance the sport and establish sustainable growth that benefits future generations of female athletes.
