Burundi take surprise 2-1 half-time lead against Algeria in 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier

Burundi lead Algeria 2-1 at half-time in their second 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match.

Algeria endured a difficult opening as Fares Chaibi scored an own goal in the fifth minute to give Burundi the lead.

The hosts then doubled their advantage seven minutes later, with J. Girumugisha finding the net in the 12th minute.

Algeria responded after the half-hour mark, M. Belloumi pulling a goal back in the 30th minute.

Despite controlling much of the match and enjoying 73% possession, Algeria have so far been unable to break down a Burundi side making the most of its opportunities.

Both teams have received one yellow card, with Burundi holding their unexpected advantage as the players went into the dressing rooms. The second half will be decisive for the outcome of the match and the group.
