Roman Weidenfeller has praised Edmond Tapsoba’s impact on German football, describing the Burkina Faso international as one of the standout performers in the Bundesliga.
The former Borussia Dortmund goalkeeper, widely regarded as a club legend, commended the Bayer Leverkusen defender for his consistency and growth, particularly following his role in Leverkusen’s recent domestic success.
Tapsoba played a key role in the club’s impressive double-winning campaign last season, which saw them lift both the Bundesliga title and the German Cup.
“Edmond Tapsoba is a top player for Bayer Leverkusen,” Weidenfeller told Africa Top Sports. “He had an incredible season last year, winning the league and the cup.
This year, the title race looks tighter with Bayern Munich in a stronger position, and unfortunately, he faced a difficult moment against them in the Champions League.”
Weidenfeller, who made over 450 appearances for Dortmund, expressed admiration for Tapsoba’s development and the influence he has had during his time in Germany’s top flight.
At just 25, the Burkinabe centre-back has become a pillar in Leverkusen’s backline and a regular feature in discussions surrounding Europe’s elite defenders.
“He’s still young and has plenty of room to grow,” Weidenfeller added. “I hope he remains in the Bundesliga because players like him add real quality to the league.
But even if he moves on, I’d love to see him join a top club where he can continue showcasing his talent on a bigger stage.”
Tapsoba, now in his fifth season with Bayer Leverkusen, has drawn considerable interest from several high-profile clubs across Europe.
His commanding presence in defence, coupled with composure on the ball, has made him a target not only for Champions League-contending sides but also for clubs in Saudi Arabia eager to bolster their ranks with top European talent.
Weidenfeller’s comments come at a time when Tapsoba’s future remains uncertain, with the summer transfer window approaching and speculation intensifying over a possible move.
Despite ongoing rumours, the former Dortmund shot-stopper remains optimistic that the Burkinabe international’s next step will further elevate his career.
Leverkusen’s success last season has thrust many of its players into the spotlight, and Tapsoba has been no exception.
His defensive partnerships, tactical discipline, and leadership qualities have earned him plaudits both at home and abroad.
While the current campaign hasn’t mirrored last season’s silverware haul, the Stallion defender continues to be one of the club’s most consistent performers.
As interest in the defender continues to grow, questions remain about whether Tapsoba will remain in Germany beyond the summer.
For Weidenfeller, whatever happens next, the future remains bright for the Leverkusen man.
“Wherever he goes, I’m sure he’ll continue to grow. He’s got the talent, the mindset, and the drive,” Weidenfeller concluded.
