Burkina Faso secures historic early qualification for AFCON 2025
Burkina Faso has become the first team, apart from the host nation, to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following a decisive 2-0 victory over Burundi.
The win solidified the Stallions’ spot in the prestigious tournament, marking a momentous achievement for the team led by head coach Brama Traoré.
The path to qualification was not straightforward, as Burkina Faso faced stiff competition during the match, which proved to be more challenging than anticipated.
Despite the hurdles, strategic decisions by Traoré and the team’s resilience ensured their success.
Early Momentum from Mohamed Konaté
The Stallions took control of the match from the outset, with striker Mohamed Konaté delivering a stunning header just five minutes into the game.
Connecting with a well-placed corner, the Al-Riyadh FC forward left the Burundian goalkeeper with no chance, setting the stage for an early lead.
This quick goal provided the perfect start for Burkina Faso, placing them on the fast track to securing their AFCON ticket, even though the rest of the match presented its share of difficulties.
In contrast to their comfortable 4-1 victory in the first leg, the return fixture in Bujumbura was a tougher challenge for the Burkinabé squad.
Coach Traoré made significant rotations to the lineup, resting key players like Dango Ouattara and Bertrand Traoré, which affected the team’s attacking fluidity.
However, the priority was clear: securing the three points needed for qualification.
Victory Sealed in Stoppage Time
Throughout the match, Burkina Faso maintained relative dominance but struggled to capitalize on several scoring opportunities.
It wasn’t until the dying moments of the game that the match was put to rest.
Substitute Bertrand Traoré, brought on in the second half, stepped up to convert a penalty in stoppage time (90+4), sealing the win and ensuring the Stallions’ spot in Morocco next year.
The late goal exemplified the team’s determination and ability to seize their chances when it mattered most.
With this victory, Burkina Faso not only secured a historic qualification but also maintained their position at the top of Group L, ahead of Senegal.
As the qualifiers head into their final two rounds, the Burkinabé team has set its sights on retaining the top spot.
Their next test will be a showdown with the Lions of Teranga, where they aim to further assert their dominance and prepare to arrive in Morocco with momentum on their side.
This achievement underscores Burkina Faso’s growing stature in African football, and with their spot at AFCON 2025 confirmed, they now look forward to competing on the continental stage next year.
