Burkina Faso: Search Begins for Paul Put’s Successor—Big Names in the Frame

Following Paul Put’s dismissal after Burkina Faso’s disappointing group-stage exit at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, the Burkinabe Football Federation (FBF) has launched a wide-ranging search for a top-tier replacement. The federation has vowed to bring in a “strong coach” to rebuild the national team, and the list of interested candidates includes several high-profile names in African and international football.

📝 Leading Candidates to Replace Paul Put:

  • Alain Giresse: The Frenchman recently left his role as Senegal head coach. Known for his deep experience in African football, Giresse has previously managed Mali and Gabon, and led Senegal at the 2015 AFCON.

  • Stephen Keshi: The late Nigerian tactician (at the time a free agent in 2015) famously guided Nigeria to the 2013 AFCON title. Keshi was also known for his ability to nurture local talent and build strong team cohesion.

  • Claude Le Roy: Nicknamed the “White Wizard” of African football, Le Roy is a veteran of numerous AFCON campaigns with teams like Cameroon, Ghana, DR Congo, and most recently, Congo Brazzaville, whom he led to the 2015 quarter-finals.

  • Jacques Santini: A surprise name in the conversation, the former France national team coach (2002–2004) and Tottenham Hotspur manager could bring European tactical discipline to the Stallions. However, his lack of experience in African football may count against him.

🔍 What Next for the Stallions?

With the 2017 AFCON qualifiers and rebuilding efforts ahead, the FBF is under pressure to choose a coach who not only has technical expertise but also a deep understanding of African football dynamics. A decision is expected in the coming weeks as the federation evaluates each candidate’s credentials and vision for the team.

The race is open, and Burkina Faso fans will be hoping the next appointment brings a fresh start and a return to form for the 2013 AFCON runners-up.
