Burkina Faso international Arsène Kouassi has completed a move from AC Ajaccio to FC Lorient following an impressive campaign in Ligue 2.

The 20-year-old left-back has signed a four-year contract with the Brittany-based side ahead of the new Ligue 1 season.

Kouassi, who was under contract with Ajaccio until June 2027, became a prime target for Lorient as they sought to strengthen their defensive options.

Negotiations between the two clubs progressed swiftly, and an agreement was reached earlier this month. According to Ouest-France, Kouassi’s decision was influenced heavily by his former manager, Olivier Pantaloni, who is believed to have advised him during the transfer process.

The financial terms of the deal have been disclosed by French journalist Sébastien Denis, who reports that Lorient have paid €1.2 million to secure the services of the promising full-back.

The move marks Kouassi’s first foray into Ligue 1, following a breakout season with Ajaccio in France’s second tier.

Kouassi’s performances during the 2024–25 season caught the attention of several clubs, both in France and abroad. Premier League side Brentford, as well as French outfits RC Lens, SCO Angers, and AS Saint-Étienne, all reportedly expressed interest in the young defender. However, Lorient moved quickly to finalise the deal and fend off the competition.

During his time with Ajaccio, Kouassi made 23 appearances and registered three assists, earning plaudits for his defensive maturity and ability to support attacking play.

His contributions were instrumental in helping Ajaccio maintain their status in Ligue 2 and prompted a significant rise in his market value, which now stands at €1.5 million.

Born in Cocody, Ivory Coast, but representing Burkina Faso at international level, Kouassi has rapidly emerged as one of West Africa’s brightest footballing prospects.

Known for his pace, tactical intelligence, and composure under pressure, the 20-year-old has already established himself as a dependable presence on the left flank.

Lorient’s decision to invest in Kouassi reflects the club’s broader strategy of targeting young, high-potential players with experience in competitive leagues.

His arrival is expected to bring renewed energy and depth to the squad as Les Merlus prepare for a challenging season in France’s top flight.

While Kouassi’s move to Lorient signals a major milestone in his young career, it also underscores the growing influence of Burkinabe players in European football.

His development will be closely watched by national team selectors and club supporters alike as he begins the next chapter of his professional journey.

Kouassi is expected to link up with his new teammates in the coming days, as Lorient ramps up preparations ahead of the Ligue 1 kickoff.

For the club and the player, the deal represents both a step forward and an opportunity to make a lasting impact at the highest level of French football.
