Bakary Koné Wins Golden Stallion as Best Burkinabe Footballer Abroad
Olympique Lyonnais defender Bakary Koné has been named the best Burkinabe footballer playing abroad, earning the prestigious Golden Stallion award.
Koné secured the top spot with 6,906.2 points, surpassing Jonathan Pitroipa, the leading scorer in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, who finished second with 5,275.6 points. Rounding out the top five were Charles Kaboré (2,529.6 points), Djakaridja Koné (1,782.4 points), Narcisse Bambara (1,614.32 points), and Jonathan Zongo (1,045.8 points).
The award, which celebrates the best Burkinabe player overseas, was previously won by Pitroipa in 2013 and Alain Traoré in 2012.
The selection was made by a jury comprising two sports journalists, a former international referee, and a former Burkinabe football star, with public voting carrying significant weight—accounting for 60% of the final decision.
Koné’s recognition underscores his consistent performances and growing influence in European football, further raising the profile of Burkinabe talent on the international stage.
