It is with sadness that the football world mourns the passing of Bruno Metsu, the former coach of the Senegal Lions, who died at the age of 59. After resigning from his coaching position at Al-Wasl in Qatar due to stomach cancer, Metsu’s health deteriorated significantly, leading to his passing on the night of Monday to Tuesday.
Bruno Metsu made significant contributions to Senegal’s football history, notably guiding the Senegalese Lions to the quarter-finals of the 2002 World Cup. Prior to this achievement, he led the El Hadj Diouf generation to the final of the 2002 African Cup of Nations, where they were runners-up to Cameroon.
Throughout his coaching career, Metsu ventured into the Gulf region, overseeing clubs in Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. He achieved notable success, winning the United Arab Emirates championship with Al Ayn Club in 2003 and 2004, as well as the AFC Champions League in 2003. His coaching stints with Al Gharrafa in Doha resulted in victories in the Qatar championship and the Qatar Crown Prince Cup in 2005. Metsu also had a stint as the coach of the United Arab Emirates from 2006 to 2008, adding a Gulf Cup title to his record in 2007.
