Bruno Guimaraes gives Arsenal’s midfield a £75m selection dilemma

Arsenal hope Bruno Guimaraes can transform the character of their midfield after arriving from Newcastle United in a £75m deal, but the Brazil international’s signing also leaves Mikel Arteta with difficult decisions over how to use the players already at his disposal.

The 28-year-old brings a combination of physical strength and technical quality that is unusual in one midfielder. His ability to operate as a holding player or in a more advanced role could give Arsenal a range of options that were not previously available to their Spanish manager.

Guimaraes’ arrival at Emirates Stadium is therefore viewed as more than the addition of another name to the squad. Arsenal believe he can change the way their midfield functions, offering Arteta greater flexibility in both the positioning and responsibilities of his players.

However, the £75m transfer also complicates the club’s current midfield structure. Rice and Zubimendi provide alternatives in deeper positions, while Odegaard and Merino are capable of operating further forward. Lewis-Skelly adds another option to a group that already offers Arteta considerable variety. Guimaraes’ versatility means he could be used alongside different combinations of those players, but each choice would affect the responsibilities and positioning of the others.

That leaves Arteta with a redistribution challenge as Arsenal integrate the Brazilian into the team. The manager must find a structure that takes advantage of Guimaraes’ strength and technical ability without leaving the other midfielders without a clear role.

The signing has consequently changed the calculations in Arsenal’s midfield. Guimaraes is expected to provide qualities that can reshape the unit, yet the competition for places means someone will inevitably face reduced space or a different responsibility.

For Arsenal, the transfer represents an attempt to add greater depth and tactical variety in midfield.
