Bruno Guimaraes deal enters decisive phase as Arsenal negotiate with Newcastle

Arsenal have moved into direct negotiations with Newcastle United over a deal for Brazil midfielder and Magpies captain Bruno Guimaraes, in a transfer that could become one of the summer’s biggest Premier League moves.

The clubs are discussing the possibility of Guimaraes moving to Emirates Stadium, with talks having progressed beyond the use of intermediaries. Formal discussions are now taking place between Arsenal and Newcastle, signalling the seriousness of the negotiations and the desire of both sides to work towards an agreement.

No final deal has been reached, but there is growing optimism among those involved that the midfielder’s future could be settled in the near future. Reports suggest Guimaraes, 28, wants to join Arsenal and play for the Premier League champions.

BBC Sport previously reported that Arsenal would need to improve their offer to persuade Newcastle to sell one of their most important players. Their initial proposal, made through intermediaries last month, was worth £70m.

A source at Newcastle subsequently confirmed that the offer had been rejected. Arsenal are now preparing to return with an improved financial package as they seek to reach an agreement with the club.

Guimaraes remains one of Arsenal’s leading targets in the current transfer window, with manager Mikel Arteta looking to strengthen his squad with high-profile additions following the club’s Premier League title success last season.

Arteta has declined to speak directly about Arsenal’s interest in the Newcastle captain, but said the club was working hard during the transfer market.

“We are very active, and we have big ambitions regarding our future plans. We need to increase the competition within the team, and we have to make sure we identify the areas and qualities we need to add in order to continue improving,” said Arteta.

While negotiations continue, Guimaraes has travelled to Spain to join Newcastle’s pre-season camp in La Manga. His trip was part of the schedule arranged in advance, following the end of the period of rest he was given after taking part in the World Cup.

The Brazil international has established himself as one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders since joining Newcastle and continued to produce influential performances last season. He scored nine goals and provided eight assists in all competitions.

Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League table last season, while Guimaraes’ form reinforced his importance to the side and his reputation as one of the division’s outstanding midfield players.

Arsenal’s interest comes as the club seeks to maintain its progress after winning the league title. An improved bid will be required if they are to convince Newcastle to part with their captain, but the move to direct talks represents a significant development in the process.
