Bruno Fernandes hat-trick fires Manchester United past Ipswich as Chelsea edge Brighton

Bruno Fernandes scored a hat-trick as Manchester United recovered from their opening-weekend defeat by beating Ipswich 5-2 at Old Trafford, while Chelsea survived a seven-goal thriller to overcome Brighton 4-3 at Stamford Bridge.

Michael Carrick’s Manchester United side looked set for another damaging result against a promoted team when Leif Davis gave Ipswich the lead in the 29th minute. His shot struck the crossbar before flying into the net, leaving the home side facing the prospect of back-to-back defeats after their humiliating 2-0 loss at Hull.

United captain Fernandes changed the game before half-time. Marcelino Nunez lost possession in the 40th minute, allowing Matheus Cunha to find Fernandes, who produced an impressive finish to draw the hosts level.

Manchester United took the lead 11 minutes into the second half when Jacob Greaves turned Harry Maguire’s effort into the Ipswich goal. Ipswich players appealed for handball against Maguire, but their claims were rejected following a review by the video assistant referee.

Greaves endured an especially difficult spell moments later when he conceded a penalty for a foul on Cunha. Fernandes took responsibility and calmly converted from the spot to put United 3-1 ahead.

The Portugal midfielder completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute, finishing from close range after efforts from Kobbie Mainoo and Bryan Mbeumo had been blocked.

It was Fernandes’s second Premier League hat-trick for Manchester United, following his treble against Leeds five years ago.

Fernandes then turned provider in the 82nd minute, sending Mbeumo through to score with a lob that clipped the crossbar before dropping over the line. Chuba Akpom added a stoppage-time tap-in for Ipswich, but it was scant reward for a team beaten for the first time since returning to the top flight.

Chelsea hold off Brighton fightback

Chelsea also maintained their perfect start under Xabi Alonso, although they were made to work hard for a 4-3 victory against Brighton.

Joao Pedro and Cole Palmer both scored for Chelsea, while Morgan Rogers created their second goal for Pedro Neto. The result followed a 3-2 victory at Fulham in Alonso’s first match in charge, when Joao Pedro, Rogers and Palmer were all on the scoresheet.

Emiliano Martinez made his Chelsea debut in goal only hours after completing his transfer from Aston Villa. He became the first player aged over 30 to start a league match for Chelsea in more than two years.

There was no place in the Chelsea team for Martinez’s Argentina team-mate Enzo Fernandez, who could still move to Manchester City before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.

Chelsea moved three goals ahead in just over 30 minutes. Romeo Lavia opened the scoring after a misunderstanding between Bart Verbruggen and Mats Wieffer allowed him to prod the ball home from a corner.

Pedro Neto doubled the advantage by turning in a cross from Rogers, before Joao Pedro completed a swift counter-attack that had begun inside Chelsea’s own penalty area.

Brighton responded almost immediately, with Malick Yalcouye beating Martinez with a powerful volley.

Chelsea’s lead was reduced further shortly after the hour when Joao Pedro inadvertently turned Pascal Groß’s cross into his own net.

Palmer restored a two-goal advantage with a moment of individual quality. After carrying the ball across the Brighton defence, he curled a shot into the bottom corner from outside the area, prompting enthusiastic celebrations from Alonso.

Groß headed a late consolation for Brighton, but Chelsea held on to join Manchester City and Hull as the only teams to take maximum points from their first two matches.

Elsewhere, Brentford looked on course to preserve their own perfect record when Kevin Schade opened the scoring away at Leeds with an audacious flick. Dominic Calvert-Lewin levelled by converting Lukas Nmecha’s driven cross, ensuring Leeds remained unbeaten.

Sunderland claimed their first points of the campaign with a 1-0 win against Fulham, Wilson Isidor scoring the decisive goal 15 minutes from full-time.
