Bruno Fernandes has appeared to signal his frustration after Manchester United captain was left on the bench by manager Michael Carrick for Sunday’s 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Fernandes was an unused substitute as Carrick made the bold decision to drop him, days after the Portugal international criticised the manager’s tactics following the 4-1 loss to Como last week.
It was only the sixth time the 32-year-old has been named among the substitutes for a Premier League match since joining Manchester United in 2020.
According to The Sun, Fernandes liked an enigmatic Instagram post about loyal people being pushed “to the point where they no longer care”. The action has been interpreted by some as a deliberate message about his current situation at the club.
The image accompanying the post showed a giant stone figure carrying a boulder that was due to roll down a hill and destroy a village. Written above it were the words: “Don’t push the loyal person to the point where they no longer care.”
The post continued: “The person who keeps everything together is usually the one nobody thinks to check on.”
It added: “Every family, group of friends and team has this person. The one who always shows up no matter what. The one who listens, fixes, covers mistakes and carries more than anyone else realises. They do not complain about it; they just keep things going because that is who they are.”
“Yet loyal people are taken for granted and overlooked faster than anyone else. Their effort begins to look automatic, and their patience is mistaken for weakness.”
The message went on: “People push them, take from them and test their patience, assuming they will always stay, until one day they do not. There is no big fight or dramatic exit; they simply quietly stop caring, stop trying and let go. Everything they were carrying collapses and falls with them.”
It concluded: “Most people never realise how much weight someone was carrying until the day they finally allow that weight to fall.”
Fernandes’ standing at Manchester United
Fernandes has been Manchester United’s standout player for much of his six years at the club. He has scored 111 goals in 334 appearances and was named the Professional Footballers’ Association Players’ Player of the Year last season, when Manchester United finished third in the Premier League.
However, supporters made clear who they believed was responsible for the team’s situation after the Bournemouth defeat. They cheered Carrick outside the stadium while loudly booing the players.
Carrick is now believed to be close to losing his job, with Eddie Howe among the candidates being considered as his replacement.
The listed schedule includes Bournemouth in the League Cup on 28 October 2026. Aston Villa and Chelsea are listed for Premier League action on 31 October 2026, alongside Manchester United.
