Brighton’s Carlos Baleba emerges on Newcastle transfer radar

Cameroon midfielder Carlos Baleba is being linked with a move from Brighton to Newcastle, with the Premier League clubs the subject of transfer speculation on 13 August.

Baleba, 22, joined Brighton from Lille in August 2023 and signed a contract running until 30 June 2028. The defensive midfielder has established himself in English football since arriving at the Amex, making 92 Premier League appearances and registering three goals and one assist.

Brighton paid €27m for Baleba when they recruited him from Lille, where he had made 21 Ligue 1 appearances and provided two assists. His current market value is listed at €55m, although there is no indication of a fee being discussed between the clubs.

Born in Douala, Baleba is a Cameroon international and plays primarily in defensive midfield. His left-footed profile and experience in the Premier League have made him the subject of interest from Newcastle, who are also competing in England’s top flight.

Any move would require Newcastle to reach an agreement with Brighton before Baleba’s existing contract expires. The rumour remains unconfirmed, and Baleba remains a Brighton player under contract through June 2028.
