Brighton stun defending champions Arsenal with emphatic 3-0 Premier League victory

Brighton & Hove Albion inflicted Arsenal’s first Premier League defeat of the season with a convincing 3-0 win over the defending champions on Saturday.

Mikel Arteta’s side had won their opening four league matches, but were unable to maintain that perfect start as Brighton produced a confident performance at home.

The defeat was particularly damaging for an Arsenal team renowned for its defensive strength. It was the first time the Gunners had conceded three goals in a league match in more than three years.

Brighton extended an impressive run of form with their third league victory in five matches. The Seagulls had also eliminated Manchester United from the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, and that confidence was evident from the opening stages.

The hosts took control after a lively start and moved ahead shortly after the half-hour mark. Pascal Gross found space to send a low shot beyond Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya and give Brighton the lead.

Arsenal had a clear opportunity to respond before half-time when Bukayo Saka was presented with a close-range chance, but he could not convert. Brighton immediately exploited the opening on the counter-attack, with Charalampos Kostoulas doubling their advantage with a long-range effort.

The visitors needed a strong reaction after the interval, but instead found themselves further behind in the 57th minute.

Arsenal failed to track Chema Andres at a corner, leaving him unmarked in the area. He took advantage of the space to head Brighton’s third goal and put the result beyond doubt.

The defending champions struggled to create a meaningful route back into the match after that. They managed a few half-chances, but Brighton remained in control and comfortably claimed all three points.

For Arsenal, the result ended their run of four successive league victories at the start of the campaign and marked a rare defensive collapse. For Brighton, it completed a notable week that began with their Carabao Cup victory over Manchester United.
