Brighton stun Arsenal 3-0 to end champions’ perfect Premier League start

Brighton ended Arsenal’s perfect start to the Premier League season with a 3-0 victory that exposed serious defensive and physical weaknesses in Mikel Arteta’s side.

The champions had won their opening four matches, but were comprehensively outplayed by Brighton on Saturday in the fifth round of the season. The hosts were quicker, better organised and more aggressive, repeatedly exploiting gaps and mistakes in Arsenal’s midfield and defence.

Pascal Groß put Brighton ahead in the 31st minute with a strike from outside the penalty area. The midfielder had time to control the ball and set himself before shooting, with Arsenal’s defenders backing away rather than closing him down.

Brighton doubled their advantage just before half-time when 19-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas turned and produced a well-placed finish in the 45th minute.

Arsenal struggled to match the intensity of the game and offered little threat through the centre of the pitch or in attack, leaving Brighton in complete control at the interval.

Brighton continued to dominate after the break and added a third goal in the 57th minute through Chema Andres. The goal left Arsenal facing an increasingly difficult task and with little prospect of mounting a recovery.

Arteta attempted to change the game with a series of substitutions. Viktor Gyokeres replaced Martin Ødegaard in the 73rd minute, before Eberechi Eze came on for Christos Tzolis. Max Dowman was then introduced for Bukayo Saka in the 81st minute.

Arsenal enjoyed 62% possession from the start of the second half, but failed to turn that control into sustained danger in front of goal.

Kai Havertz came closest to reducing the deficit in the 78th minute after being released by Gyokeres. However, his weak effort was comfortably saved by Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton remained dangerous at the other end. David Raya denied Matt O’Riley in the 87th minute, while Malick Yalcouye struck the crossbar moments later as the home side searched for a fourth goal.

Arsenal applied pressure late on but could not change the scoreline, while Brighton preserved their clean sheet to complete a convincing victory.

The result lifted Brighton to 10 points and third place, at least temporarily. Arsenal remain on 12 points in second, behind Manchester City on goal difference.
