Brighton sign Algeria defender Jaouen Hadjam from Young Boys

Brighton have announced the signing of Algeria international Jaouen Hadjam from Swiss club Young Boys on a contract running until the summer of 2031.

Hadjam completed his medical before putting pen to paper on his long-term agreement with the Premier League club. Brighton sporting director Mike Kyff said the defender would strengthen a squad that already has considerable options at the back.

“We believe Jaouen will be a great addition to the team and will strengthen our already strong defensive options,” Kyff said in comments published on Brighton’s official website.

“He is a modern left-back, known for his pace, attacking effectiveness and technical ability, which fit perfectly with our style of play.”

Kyff added: “He has proved his worth as a versatile player in Switzerland, and we look forward to working with him.”

The move brings to an end a period of interest from several clubs in Hadjam, who had been monitored by Porto ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Portuguese club had also attempted to sign him during the previous winter transfer window, but the effort did not result in a deal.

Turkish side Besiktas were also interested and submitted an offer worth 3m euros. Young Boys considered that bid insufficient and asked for 5m euros for the Algeria international.

Hadjam was additionally linked in reports with Hull City, who had recently secured promotion to the English top flight.

The 23-year-old began his football career with Paris before progressing through France’s youth international teams. He later chose to represent Algeria at senior level.

He made his international debut for Algeria in 2023 and has since won 21 caps.

Hadjam was also a team-mate of Egypt striker Mostafa Mohamed during the 2023-24 season, when the pair were at Nantes.

Brighton said the defender’s pace, attacking contribution and technical qualities were central to their decision to bring him to the club. His ability to operate in more than one position was also highlighted by Kyff as an important part of his profile.

The agreement with Brighton keeps Hadjam at the club until the end of the 2030-31 season, following his spell in Switzerland with Young Boys. His arrival gives Brighton another defensive option as the club continues to build its squad around players capable of contributing both defensively and in possession.

Hadjam’s international career began after his involvement in the French age-group set-up, and he has now established himself as an Algeria player. His next step will be to adapt to English football after moving from Young Boys to Brighton in a deal confirmed by the club.
