Brighton hand Arsenal a first defeat of the season in dominant 3-0 Premier League win

Brighton produced a commanding display to beat Arsenal 3-0 on Saturday, ending the reigning Premier League champions’ perfect start after four successive victories.

The result was more than a heavy defeat for Mikel Arteta’s side. Arsenal struggled defensively and physically throughout the match, with their midfield and back line unable to cope with Brighton’s pace, movement and intensity. The hosts repeatedly found space and punished mistakes as they controlled the contest.

Brighton expose Arsenal’s weaknesses

Pascal Groß opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a strike from outside the penalty area. The Brighton midfielder had time to receive the ball and set himself without meaningful pressure from Arsenal’s retreating defenders before finding the net.

Arsenal were unable to respond effectively and Brighton doubled their advantage just before half-time. Charalampos Kostoulas, aged 19, produced a well-placed turning finish in the 45th minute, sending the ball beyond David Raya’s reach.

The visitors struggled to match Brighton’s tempo during the first half and lacked sharpness both in midfield and in attack. Brighton, by contrast, remained organised and aggressive as they took a 2-0 lead into the interval.

Their superiority continued after the restart, with Chima Andres adding a third goal in the 57th minute. The goal left Arsenal with a major task to rescue the match and further underlined Brighton’s control.

Arteta attempted to change the course of the game through his substitutions. Viktor Gyokeres replaced Martin Ødegaard in the 73rd minute, before Eberechi Eze came on for Christos Tzolis. Max Dowman was then introduced for Bukayo Saka in the 81st minute.

Arsenal possession fails to produce a comeback

Arsenal enjoyed 62% possession from the start of the second half, but their control of the ball did not translate into sustained danger in front of goal.

Kai Havertz came close to reducing the deficit in the 78th minute after being played through by Gyokeres. However, his effort lacked power and was comfortably saved by Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.

Brighton remained the more threatening side despite Arsenal’s late pressure. David Raya had to deny Matt O’Riley in the 87th minute, while Malick Yalcouye struck the crossbar moments later as the hosts went close to adding a fourth.

Arsenal could not alter the score before the final whistle, while Brighton preserved their clean sheet to complete a deserved victory. The performance highlighted Arsenal’s difficulties in physical, technical and defensive terms.

Brighton moved up to 10 points and into third place temporarily. Arsenal remain second on 12 points, behind Manchester City on goal difference.
