Carlos Baleba wants Manchester United move

Brighton & Hove Albion have suffered an early setback ahead of the 2026-27 season after midfielder Carlos Baleba picked up an ankle ligament injury that has placed his availability for the start of the campaign in doubt.

The Cameroon international sustained the setback during pre-season and was ruled out of Brighton’s friendly victory over Strasbourg on Saturday, where Fabian Hurzeler’s side secured a 4-3 win.

While the club expect Baleba to spend some time on the sidelines, there is optimism that the injury will not become a long-term concern. However, his absence comes at an inconvenient moment as Brighton prepare for a demanding opening schedule.

The Seagulls will face either Tromso or CFR Cluj in the away leg of their Conference League qualifier on August 20 before beginning their Premier League campaign three days later against Aston Villa at the Amex Stadium.

Brighton face nervous wait over key midfielder

Baleba’s injury is a major concern for Brighton given the timing and the importance of the 22-year-old to their midfield structure.

The former Lille player made 31 Premier League appearances last season, continuing his development after arriving on the south coast in the summer of 2023.

However, Brighton will be hoping the midfielder can rediscover the dominant form that made him one of the most exciting young midfielders in Europe during the 2024-25 campaign.

His performances had attracted serious attention from Manchester United, who monitored his progress throughout last season after previously holding discussions over a possible move. Despite their interest, a deal never materialised, with United instead strengthening their midfield by pursuing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

Baleba remains an important asset for Brighton, and the club will be eager to have him available as soon as possible.

Hurzeler prepared to adjust after Baleba setback

Brighton correspondent Andy Naylor believes the injury represents a significant challenge for Hurzeler, particularly with the club’s season starting earlier than usual due to European commitments.

“Baleba’s injury is a blow,” Naylor said, highlighting the difficult timing of the midfielder’s setback before Brighton’s Conference League qualifier and Premier League opener.

However, Brighton’s head coach has experience adapting his midfield options. Baleba’s influence reduced last season as his form dipped amid speculation linking him with Manchester United.

The Cameroon international started 23 of Brighton’s 38 league matches, was substituted at half-time on four occasions and completed the full 90 minutes only three times.

Despite those struggles, Brighton remain aware of the qualities that made Baleba a standout performer previously. His physical power, ability to drive forward from midfield and defensive energy were key reasons elite clubs began monitoring him.

The Seagulls will now hope the injury setback does not prevent him from returning to that level.

Summer rebuild continues at Brighton

While Baleba’s injury has created uncertainty, Brighton have continued strengthening their squad ahead of another challenging season.

The club have added several new faces during the transfer window, including Luka Vuskovic, Michael Svoboda, Pascal Struijk, Costinha and Zadok Yohanna.

Those additions provide Hurzeler with greater depth, but Baleba’s unique qualities make him difficult to replace.
