Dutch-born Ghanaian striker Brian Brobbey’s moment of brilliance wasn’t enough to rescue Ajax from a 2-1 defeat to AZ Alkmaar in an electrifying Eredivisie clash at the AFAS Stadion.
AZ took the lead in the 65th minute when Troy Parrott smashed home Peer Koopmeiners’ pinpoint cross, sending the home fans into a frenzy. The duo struck again in the 76th minute, with Koopmeiners providing a perfect corner for Mayckel Lahdo to double the lead with a towering header.
Ajax, struggling to capitalize on their superior possession, found hope in the 81st minute. Brobbey, displaying his strength and vision, held off defenders to set up Mika Godts, whose precise shot found the bottom left corner. However, it was too little, too late for the Amsterdam giants.
Despite Brobbey’s second assist of the season, Ajax slipped to their second Eredivisie defeat, further dampening their campaign. The head-to-head tally now reads AZ 13 wins, Ajax 17, and six draws.
Ajax must regroup quickly, with a crucial UEFA Europa League tie against Lazio looming on December 12.
