Brentford turn down Newcastle’s latest offer for DR Congo forward Yoane Wissa

Brentford have turned down Newcastle United’s latest offer for forward Yoane Wissa, despite the package being worth up to £40 million.

The proposal included £35 million upfront and an additional £5 million in hard-to-reach bonuses, but the Bees remain firm in their stance, The Athletic reports.

Club sources insist no valuation has been set for the 28-year-old, who is keen on a move to St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s approach follows a rejected £25 million bid in July, while Nottingham Forest also failed in their pursuit of the DR Congo international earlier this summer.

Wissa, who netted 19 goals in the Premier League last season, returned from Brentford’s training camp in Portugal to hold talks over his future but has been absent from both pre-season fixtures and the opening-day defeat to Nottingham Forest.

The Magpies have intensified their search for attacking reinforcements after missing out on multiple targets, including Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Liam Delap, and Benjamin Sesko.

Their urgency has grown following Alexander Isak’s declaration that he wants to leave, with the Swedish striker admitting his “relationship with the club can’t continue.”

Signed from Lorient in 2021, Wissa has a year left on his deal, though Brentford can trigger a 12-month extension.

His importance is heightened after a summer exodus that saw captain Christian Norgaard move to Arsenal, Bryan Mbeumo join Manchester United, and manager Thomas Frank depart for Tottenham Hotspur.

Together, Mbeumo and Wissa accounted for 39 of Brentford’s 66 league goals last season, underlining his value to the club’s attack.

Since arriving in England, Wissa has registered 49 goals and 13 assists across 149 appearances, establishing himself as one of Brentford’s most reliable performers.
