The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed seasoned Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its Acting General Secretary following the Executive Committee meeting in Cairo on Sunday.
Adamu, who was among two people tipped along with Gelson Fernandes to take over the position as exclusively revealed by AfricaSoccer.com three days ago, steps into the role following the departure of Swiss-Congolese official Véron Mosengo-Omba.
The move, which was announced by CAF President Patrice Motsepe, marks a significant shift in the leadership of African football’s governing body.
Adamu, who previously served as CAF’s Director of Competitions, becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the most senior administrative position in the Cairo-based organisation.
He will be among those to be considered for the position permanently and he will start the job immediately.
His appointment is seen by industry insiders as a strategic move to ensure operational continuity as CAF prepares for a busy calendar of continental tournaments and structural reforms under President Patrice Motsepe.
In his new capacity, Adamu will oversee the day-to-day administration of the confederation, managing the secretariat and coordinating the execution of decisions made by the CAF Executive Committee.
His elevation comes at a time when CAF is focused on increasing the commercial viability of African football and improving the governance standards of its member associations.
Before ascending to this top continental role, Adamu built a formidable reputation as an innovator in sports management after organising of one Africa best regional tournament with the WAFU Cup of Nations in Ghana in 2017.
He is widely recognised as the founder and CEO of Copa Lagos, Nigeria’s premier international beach soccer tournament.
His work with Kinetic Sport Management over the last decade helped transform beach soccer from a niche interest into a major televised event in West Africa, demonstrating his ability to manage complex logistics and high-stakes commercial partnerships.
Adamu’s administrative pedigree is further bolstered by his elite academic background. An alumnus of the prestigious FIFA Master programme, he holds a degree in Business Management and Computer Science from the American University of Paris.
This combination of technical expertise and hands-on experience in tournament operations made him the standout candidate to lead the CAF secretariat during this transition period.
His tenure as Director of Competitions, which began in 2018, saw him manage nearly 30 different African competitions.
Colleagues describe him as a “technocrat” who prioritises efficiency and regulatory compliance—traits that will be vital as he navigates the political and financial complexities of the General Secretary’s office.
Adamu is the son of Dr. Amos Adamu, a veteran of sports administration who formerly served on the FIFA and CAF Executive Committees.
While he follows a family tradition of sports leadership, Samson has carved out a distinct path through modern sports marketing and operational excellence.
As the General Secretary, Adamu’s immediate priority will be the final preparations for upcoming AFCON qualifiers and the continued roll-out of the African School Football Championship. His permanent status in the role is expected to be discussed at the next CAF General Assembly.
