FIFA, the global governing body for football, has admonished Zambia over allegations of government interference in the affairs of the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ).
In a letter dated March 5, 2025, FIFA Chief Member Associations Officer Elkhan Mammadov reminded FAZ of its statutory obligation to be an independent body, free from any kind of external influence, including government interference.
The threat followed after the National Sports Council of Zambia (NSCZ) had suggested the establishment of a transitional committee, an autonomous electoral committee, involvement of FIFA, and investigation into FAZ’s electoral process.
However, FIFA has cautioned that the establishment of such a committee would be interpreted as contravening its statutes, which prohibit government interference in football matters.
FIFA reiterated that breach of these rules would result in severe penalties, including suspension of FAZ from international football.
The measure would have disastrous effects on Zambian football, potentially banning national teams and clubs from competing in international games.
FAZ has been urged to preserve its independence and not succumb to any improper influence.
FIFA requested to be informed of any further developments, showing that if not done so, disciplinary measures may be taken.
This development is alarming to the future of Zambian football since a FIFA suspension would set back the country’s advancement on the global scene.
The fans and stakeholders are now holding their breaths for the response of the Zambian government, hoping for a response that will prevent FIFA from imposing harsh actions.
