BREAKING: Libya loses to Nigeria by forfeit, fined USD 50,000 by CAF over aborted AFCON qualifier
The ruling by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the aborted AFCON 2025 qualifying match between Libya and Nigeria has sparked considerable interest across the football community.
According to CAF’s disciplinary decision, Libya’s Football Federation breached multiple articles within the African Cup of Nations regulations and the CAF Disciplinary Code, specifically Articles 31, 82, and 151.
This violation led to the decision to forfeit the match in favour of Nigeria, with a default score of 3-0, as the scheduled match on October 15, 2024, in Benghazi was canceled under circumstances attributed to Libya’s Federation.
Furthermore, CAF has imposed a fine of USD 50,000 on the Libyan Football Federation, with a strict timeline for payment within 60 days from the notice of this decision.
This fine highlights CAF’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the competition and enforcing disciplinary measures to deter future breaches.
The ruling reinforces CAF’s stance on regulatory compliance, setting a precedent for accountability in African football.
By dismissing additional motions for relief, CAF’s decision underscores the seriousness of adhering to established protocols, and it sends a clear message to other member federations about the importance of upholding the standards of the sport across the continent.
