In a shock move that has caused shockwaves in West African football, President of the Guinean Football Federation (FEGUIFOOT) Aboubakar “Bouba” Sampil has been suspended from office following a unanimous decision by the federation’s Executive Committee.
The action was taken during a crucial meeting held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, in Conakry as there is an increasing fear of mismanagement, allegations of forgery, and unbefitting financial conduct.
Sampil, who was elected in January 2024, has been in growing criticism since his short time in power.
Sources from the federation reveal that tensions between the leadership have been rising for months due to allegations of poor governance, a lack of transparency, and questionable administrative decisions.
These tensions came to a boiling point with the Tuesday definitive EXCO vote, led by Vice President Mamadou Barry, where all seven members voted to suspend him.
In an official communiqué, the Executive Committee cited “major malfunctions” as the reasons for action and emphasized that regaining credibility for the association is imperative.
Sory Doumbouya will serve provisionally as president until a definitive decision is made at the General Assembly on May 8, 2025.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has also been notified of the suspension, marking a watershed in Guinea football administration.
The upheaval could have broader implications for governance standards across the region’s football associations.
