Neymar Faces Possible Suspension Over Underwear Advertising at World Cup
Brazilian star Neymar is under threat of suspension for Brazil’s upcoming World Cup match after drawing FIFA’s criticism for displaying advertising on his underwear during a game.
The incident occurred after Brazil’s 4-1 victory over Cameroon at the Brasilia stadium, where Neymar, greeted by enthusiastic fans, lifted his shirt to reveal colorful boxer shorts prominently featuring a beachwear brand. While seemingly innocuous, FIFA regulations strictly prohibit players from wearing any clothing displaying religious, political, or commercial messages on the field.
This is not Neymar’s first warning: the Barcelona forward had previously been cautioned over similar conduct during his club matches. According to German tabloid Bild, FIFA has now issued a formal warning to the Brazilian Football Federation regarding Neymar’s actions, signaling potential disciplinary measures should the behaviour continue.
FIFA’s strict stance on such matters is reminiscent of the heavy sanction imposed on Danish striker Nicklas Bendtner at Euro 2012. Bendtner was fined €100,000 and suspended for one match after celebrating a goal by revealing underwear displaying a website address—a clear breach of UEFA’s advertising rules.
With the World Cup’s knockout stages intensifying, Neymar must be cautious to avoid further infractions that could jeopardize his participation in Brazil’s next fixture.
