English pubs are set to reap a windfall of 24 million euros during the World Cup, as revealed by Catch Brasil.com. The Interior Ministry has granted them permission to extend their opening hours by two hours on England match nights.
During the evenings of the national team’s matches in Brazil in June, pubs will be allowed to remain open until 1 a.m. instead of the usual 11 p.m. This decision comes after the British Pubs Association (BBPA) had their initial request rejected by the Minister of the Interior in February.
British Prime Minister David Cameron personally intervened to address the matter, ensuring that pubs could extend their hours. With 49,400 establishments across the United Kingdom expected to benefit, the estimated windfall for pubs totals 24 million euros.
This development is welcomed by many, especially those in the hospitality industry, as long as England continues to perform well in the tournament.
