Bradley Cross speaks on fulfilling World Cup dream with South Africa
South Africa defender Bradley Cross has described his inclusion in Bafana Bafana’s final squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the fulfilment of a long-term ambition after years of persistence and hard work.
The 25-year-old full-back was named in South Africa’s final 26-man squad for the tournament, which begins next month, despite still waiting to make his senior international debut.
Alongside Philadelphia Union defender Olwethu Makhanya, Cross is one of only two uncapped players selected for the competition.
The Kaizer Chiefs defender previously represented South Africa at youth level and spent part of his development career in Europe with the youth systems of Schalke 04 and Newcastle United.
However, establishing himself abroad proved challenging because of the intense competition he faced during his time overseas.
Speaking after his call-up, Cross explained how representing Bafana Bafana had remained a major objective throughout his career.
“First of all, it was clearly a long-term goal for me; I was often part of the preliminary selection. So I told myself that I had to work hard and prove to the coach that I was capable and that I could be part of the group,” Cross said.
The defender reflected on his football journey and the sacrifices made along the way, particularly during his years in Europe before deciding to return to South African football.
“I was in the youth selections since I was very young, I think I was already in the under-20s at 16, then I went abroad. It was obviously not easy there, there was a lot of competition.
“Then I decided to return to South Africa, and my main objective was to join the Bafana Bafana squad, and since then I’ve been working hard and staying focused.”
Cross also addressed discussions surrounding his selection as the only Kaizer Chiefs player included in the national squad. He insisted that external opinions and social media conversations do not influence his mentality or approach.
“I don’t really focus on social media, I prefer to stay focused on myself and what I can control. Like I said, I work hard, I put my head down and I look ahead,” added the Chiefs defenseman.
South Africa have been drawn in Group A for the World Cup alongside co-hosts Mexico, the Czech Republic and South Korea. The tournament is set to begin on 11 June, with Bafana Bafana aiming to make a strong impression on their return to the global stage.
