Bournemouth make European history with victory over Real Sociedad

Bournemouth marked their first-ever European campaign with a 2-1 win against Real Sociedad in San Sebastian, taking a two-goal lead inside the opening 20 minutes before withstanding a sustained second-half challenge.

Justin Kluivert appeared to give the visitors an early advantage when he volleyed Adrien Truffert’s superb delivery into the net. The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but a lengthy VAR review overturned the decision and confirmed Kluivert had remained onside.

It was Bournemouth’s first goal in UEFA competition and the opening sign of an impressive start from Marco Rose’s side, who continued to control the match after taking the lead.

They doubled their advantage in the 20th minute through Rayan. Alex Scott lifted an excellent pass over the Real Sociedad defence and Rayan met it with a controlled header, directing the ball into the far corner.

The Cherries came close to extending their lead before the half-hour mark when Evanilson’s glancing header struck the post. Scott then threatened again, but his effort went over the crossbar as Bournemouth maintained the pressure.

Real Sociedad returned from the interval with greater purpose and reduced the deficit in the 58th minute. Sergio Gomez sent a cross-shot towards the Bournemouth goal and, with no player able to touch the ball, it continued into the far corner beyond Dorde Petrovic.

The goal changed the atmosphere inside the stadium and encouraged Real Sociedad to chase an equaliser. Goncalo Guedes tested Petrovic with a powerful strike from the edge of the penalty area, but the Bournemouth goalkeeper made a strong save.

Mikel Oyarzabal also came close, sending a promising attempt onto the roof of the net as the home side continued to apply pressure.

Bournemouth were forced to defend for long periods in the closing stages, with Petrovic playing a crucial role in preserving their lead. He denied Orri Oskarsson from close range and then saved from the Icelandic striker again during stoppage time.

The result secured a historic European victory for Bournemouth and gave Rose his first win against top-flight opposition since he became the club’s manager.

Real Sociedad, meanwhile, extended their winless home record against English opposition to six matches. Their record in those games is two draws and four defeats.
