Boulaye Dia returns to Ligue 1 with Senegal place at stake

Boulaye Dia is set to join Rennes from Lazio Rome on loan, giving the Senegal striker a crucial opportunity to rebuild his club career and force his way back into Patrick Vieira’s plans.

The 29-year-old is expected to return to Ligue 1 five years after leaving Reims, with Rennes and Lazio having agreed a deal worth an estimated two million euros for the loan. The agreement includes an eight-million-euro purchase option, which could become compulsory.

The move remains subject to Dia completing a medical and the final paperwork being signed. Once those formalities are completed, he will join the Rouge et Noir in an attempt to revive a career that has lost momentum during his time in Italy.

Dia first established himself at Reims, scoring 14 Ligue 1 goals during the 2020-21 season. His performances earned him moves to Villarreal and then Salernitana, where he continued to demonstrate the qualities that had made him one of France’s most promising forwards.

His spell at Lazio, however, has been less consistent. Competition for places, tactical changes and periods without a goal meant Dia never became an undisputed starter in Rome. Rennes now offers him the chance to return to a league he knows well and the environment in which his talents first became widely recognised.

The Senegal international has also endured difficult periods with the national team, partly because of injuries and partly because he struggled to establish regular playing time at club level. His move to Rennes therefore arrives with both sporting and international consequences.

A demanding role at Rennes

Rennes coach Franck Haise had been looking for a central striker capable of helping replace Breel Embolo and forming an effective partnership with Esteban Lepaul. Dia is not expected to arrive merely as a reserve option, but he will still have to earn his place in an ambitious side where competition and pressure will be greater than during his early years at Reims.

To succeed, he will need to rediscover his physical strength, his movement in behind defences and his finishing in front of goal. Rennes represents an opportunity, but also a significant test of whether he can again perform consistently at the highest level.

The timing is especially important for Dia’s international future. Cherif Ndiaye’s surprise retirement has created an opening in Senegal’s attacking options, while Dia was one of the notable absentees from the 2026 World Cup after being limited to a substitute appearance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Vieira is preparing a new cycle with the Lions of Teranga and has several alternatives available in attack. Nicolas Jackson, Bamba Dieng and Habib Diallo are among those competing for places, while a number of younger forwards could also benefit from the renewal expected within the squad.

Dia was part of Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations-winning team in 2022, but his standing has weakened over the past few years. His experience remains valuable, yet that past success will no longer be enough to guarantee selection.

With his 30th birthday approaching, his performances for Rennes are likely to carry considerable weight. A successful return to Ligue 1 could strengthen his case for a place with Senegal, while another difficult club season would leave him facing increased competition from established internationals and emerging forwards.
