Boulaye Dia explains why his goal against Napoli was not among his career’s biggest
Rennes striker Boulaye Dia has revealed that his famous goal against Napoli in 2023 was not one of the most important of his career, despite its significance for Salernitana supporters.
Speaking to Flashscore, the Senegal international reflected on his time in Italy, where he scored 16 goals in one season for Salernitana, and explained why he considers other moments in his career more significant.
“No. After all, I’ve scored at the World Cup and in a Champions League semi-final. There have been more important goals for me, especially because we ultimately didn’t win in Naples. I remember, for example, a decisive last-minute goal against Hellas Verona to win the match. For Salerno, spoiling their rivals’ celebrations was special, but personally it wasn’t among the most important goals.”
Dia scored a late equaliser in Salernitana’s 1-1 draw against Napoli in April 2023, delaying their local rivals’ celebrations of the Serie A title. Although the goal became a memorable moment for Salernitana supporters, Dia explained that its wider significance was largely tied to the rivalry between the two clubs.
The 29-year-old also spoke positively about his time at Salernitana, where he enjoyed one of the most productive periods of his career.
“Beautiful memories. We had a good team and some good coaches too. First Davide Nicola, then Paulo Sousa, under whom we played really well. His style of play suited me perfectly. I was in a good place and full of confidence. When you feel good somewhere, it shows on the pitch.”
Dia has since played for Villarreal and Lazio before returning to France with Rennes. His experience across different leagues has helped shape his career, and he is now looking to make an impact back in Ligue 1.
