Badredine Bouanani is still searching for a breakthrough at VfB Stuttgart after another challenging outing in the Europa League play-offs.

The Algerian international, whose playing time has been limited since the beginning of February, returned to the starting line-up on Thursday for the second leg against Celtic Glasgow.

Stuttgart progressed 4-2 on aggregate despite a 1-0 defeat on the night, having largely dominated the first leg.

Bouanani’s inclusion marked his first start since 29 January.

In the six matches played by Stuttgart this month prior to the tie, he had managed just 22 minutes across two substitute appearances.

The Europa League encounter offered him an opportunity to reassert himself in coach Sebastian Hoeneß’s attacking plans.

However, his performance raised questions. In the first half, the winger attempted a long-range effort that failed to trouble the goalkeeper.

Shortly afterwards, he misdirected a shot from a cross, missing a clear opportunity. After the interval, further chances followed.

Positioned close to goal, his effort was blocked before another attempt was saved.

The statistics underlined a difficult evening.

Bouanani did not create a clear-cut chance for a team-mate and won only one of his five duels.

For a player seeking to cement a regular place in a competitive attacking rotation, it was not the statement performance he may have hoped for.

Since the start of the season, the 21-year-old has made 24 appearances in all competitions, including nine starts.

He has scored two goals and provided one assist, with all of his decisive contributions coming in the Europa League.

As Stuttgart continue their European campaign, Bouanani faces the task of turning promise into productivity, with competition for places showing no sign of easing.
