Borussia Dortmund have extended head coach Niko Kovac’s contract until 2029, securing the Croatian’s future at the club beyond his initial period in charge.
The club also renewed the contracts of Robert Kovac and Filip Tapalovic, who are both members of the coaching staff.
Kovac, 45, has been Dortmund’s head coach since February 2025. During his time in charge, the club have played 80 matches, recording 49 wins, 14 draws and 17 defeats.
Despite that record, Dortmund have not yet won a trophy under Kovac.
The decision to extend the coach’s contract comes with Dortmund currently second in the Bundesliga table on 13 points. They trail Freiburg only on goal difference, with Freiburg listed as the league leaders.
Dortmund are two points ahead of Bayern Munich, who are also described as the leaders in the current standings.
Kovac’s new contract represents a continued commitment from Dortmund to the coaching team that has overseen the club since February 2025. His staff will remain in place alongside him after Robert Kovac and Filip Tapalovic also agreed extensions.
The 80-match record under Kovac includes a clear majority of victories, with Dortmund winning 49 times. They have lost 17 matches and drawn 14 during the same period.
However, the team have yet to add silverware during his tenure. Their current position in the Bundesliga means the club remain well placed in the title race, with 13 points from their matches so far and only goal difference separating them from Freiburg.
The gap to Bayern Munich is two points, while Dortmund’s position behind Freiburg is determined by goal difference.
