Bordeaux Captain Lamine Sané Eyes European Push in Final Ligue 1 Stretch
With just four games remaining in the Ligue 1 season, Bordeaux captain Lamine Sané believes his side still has a chance to qualify for European competition. Currently sixth in the table with 55 points—behind Paris Saint-Germain (71), Lyon (68), Monaco, and Saint-Étienne—Bordeaux’s European hopes rest on a strong finish and a slip from their closest rivals.
Speaking on the club’s official website, the Senegalese defender expressed his belief that overtaking fourth-placed Saint-Étienne remains achievable.
“Mathematically, compared to Saint-Étienne, we can try to get that fourth place,” said Sané. “Monaco is cruising at a good pace, so it’s going to be complicated. I think Paris will be champions; the Champions League was holding them back a bit. They have a squad large enough to finish the season well.”
While Sané is currently sidelined with injury, he remains optimistic about returning before the season concludes—particularly with one final match to be played at the historic Stade Chaban-Delmas before the club moves into its new home.
“Yes, we’re thinking about it. Even if I’m injured, I’ll do everything I can to play this last match. At Chaban, that’s where I started, and I’d like to leave this stadium with very good memories,” he said.
With Bordeaux set to move into their state-of-the-art stadium next season, there is added motivation to close this chapter of their history on a high. Sané highlighted the upcoming fixture against Montpellier as potentially decisive in the race for Europe.
“The New Stadium is very beautiful. We’d like to do well there. I also think that the match against Montpellier will be decisive for Europe.”
As the season reaches its climax, Bordeaux will be looking to capitalise on any missteps from the teams above them, with their captain urging one final push in what has been a competitive campaign.
