Bonaventure Kalou has addressed the criticism surrounding his decision not to back Didier Drogba’s candidacy for the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) presidency. Instead, the former Ivory Coast international opted to support Idriss Diallo, sparking significant backlash from fans and pundits alike.
Kalou, who enjoyed a successful career both domestically and internationally, explained his reasons for supporting Diallo, highlighting a deep personal connection and shared values.
“I saw in Idriss Diallo a kind of reflection of myself,” Kalou stated. “We share qualities such as courage and determination.
This personal affinity is the reason I chose to support Diallo, despite the criticism.”
The former striker emphasized that his choice was not a slight against Drogba but rather a decision based on his knowledge and trust in Diallo’s capabilities and experience.
Kalou elaborated on Diallo’s qualifications, noting that he had extensive experience within the FIF, having served as vice-president during Kalou’s playing days.
“I knew Idriss Diallo well. He has a lot of experience and was vice-president of the FIF when I was a player. I knew he was the right man.
We share many common traits, including perseverance.”
Kalou also addressed the criticism he faced for his decision, expressing that he had developed a thick skin over the years, which helped him cope with negative feedback.
“I have built myself a kind of armor to protect myself against attacks. It makes me impervious to certain comments.
People are often fanatics, but in football, there are no secrets,” he remarked.
Despite the public outcry, Kalou stood firm in his support for Diallo, ready to face the consequences of his choice. “If his candidacy fails, I will be with him in this defeat.
Criticism is inevitable, especially since I decided to become a footballer at 17. It doesn’t keep me awake at night,” Kalou concluded.
Kalou’s decision underscores the complexities and personal dimensions often involved in leadership contests within sports organizations.
His stance reveals a thoughtful and principled approach to what is often a highly charged and emotional process.
As the FIF elections approach, Kalou’s support for Diallo will likely continue to be a point of discussion among fans and analysts.
However, his clear and reasoned explanation may help to assuage some of the criticism and highlight the importance of individual conviction and integrity in such decisions.
