Ghana secured its place in the semi-finals of the 2025 WAFU-B U20 Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Benin in Prampram on Wednesday afternoon.
After drawing 1-1 with Nigeria in their opening fixture, the Black Satellites needed a win to guarantee progression from Group A.
Desmond Ofei’s side began the game by probing Benin’s defence but struggled to carve out clear openings in the first half.
The breakthrough finally arrived shortly after the interval when Blesse Ege capitalised on a swift counter-attack to slot home in the 52nd minute.
The 19-year-old forward, finding space on the right flank, cut inside and curled his effort beyond the Benin goalkeeper to spark jubilant scenes among the home crowd.
Despite Benin’s efforts to respond, Ghana’s backline remained resolute, repelling a handful of set-piece deliveries and long balls into the box.
Midfielder Michael Owusu marshalled the centre of the park, breaking up play and recycling possession to deny their opponents any sustained pressure.
Benin’s best chance fell to winger Junior Olugbade late in the match, but his low drive from 20 yards was comfortably saved by Ghana custodian Kwame Mensah.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, the Black Satellites retained their composure to see out the win, ending the contest with a slender but decisive advantage.
With this victory, Ghana finishes the group stage on four points, level with Nigeria but ahead on goal difference, and progresses as one of the two qualifiers from Group A.
Benin, having lost all three matches, exit the tournament without a point.
Ofei praised his players’ character and resilience after the final whistle.
“We showed great determination to win tonight,” he said. “Defensively we were strong, and when the chance came, Blesse took it. Now we look forward to the semi-finals with confidence.”
Ghana will face the runners-up from Group B in the last four, with the semi-final fixtures scheduled for Friday.
The Black Satellites will aim to carry their momentum forward as they bid for their first UFOA-B U20 title on home soil.
